Extensive Property: A property which depends on the size of the sample observed. For example , mass and volume.
Intensive Property: A property which is independent of the size of the sample observed. For example, density, melting point, boiling point and color. The density of water is 1.00 g/mL at 4.0 oC regardless of how much water is present in the sample. The measurement of the intensive properties of a pure substance can be used to identify it.
