Honors Laboratory (CHEM 1102H)

This laboratory course accompanies the first semester of Principles of Chemistry.  Students are required to be enrolled in CHEM 1104 Sec 5 (Principles of Chemistry, Discussion).  This is the Friday section that meets at 1:25 in C131 with Dr. Stone. The successful completion of this course is required in order to earn the Honors credit. It is strongly recommended that students enrolled in this section have taken high school chemistry or another laboratory science course.

We will meet for Discussion on Fridays at 1:25 in C131.  The class will spend about half the time discussing the previous week's results and about half the time discussing the experiment for the next week.  Therefore, it is imperative that you attend the discussion.    Students who miss discussion will not be allowed to work in lab during the following week.  "Emergencies" will be dealt with on a case by case basis.  

Announcements

Assignments for the first week: 

• Learn Excel (or some other software)
• Submit a one page personal introduction to Dr. Stone (S201A) by Monday, September 13, 1998. 
• Read the first lab and come to discussion prepared to discuss it.  

Before you come to class, read these sections.

• Stockroom procedures, how to check-in, how to get equipment and other very important information.
• Introduction describing how to keep a lab notebook and some safety issues.
• Safety check-list, you must read this and give a written statement that you have read it to John Burt (the stockroom manager).

Note: Your laboratory instructor will notify you of the dates when experiments are due. Late experiments will be drastically penalized.

One day late = -2 points
More than one day and less than one week late= -5 points
More than one week late = -10 points
